Our School Vision for P.E

‘Learning to learn, Learning for Life’

We are committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of all our children, fostering attitudes and skills that will remain with them beyond their time here. We want our children to have a positive view of P.E and Sport in order to develop a life-long love of physical activity. We want all our children to understand how to stay healthy and active whilst developing the fundamental movement skills needed to be physically literate.

At Beckwithshaw Primary our aim is to have a fully inclusive curriculum, including PE. We want to provide our children with the highest quality PE teaching and ensure that all children participate fully and enjoy each lesson. We provide children with a minimum of 2 hours quality PE every week and endeavor to provide a wide range of physically active after school clubs. We support the development of school sport through our partnership work, participation in leagues and tournaments and after school provision.

We are proud to announce we have been awarded the Silver Quality Mark by the Youth Sports Trust and the Sainsbury’s Silver School Games Award.

P.E Curriculum

At least two hours of P.E is delivered in school each week. Class teachers deliver challenging and engaging sessions in a wide range of areas which include dance, games,  gymnastics, outdoor and adventurous activities such as gorge scrambling, abseiling and camping. Throughout these sessions children are taught about physical fitness, how to stay healthy, how to improve their fundamental movement skills. Alongside this, lessons include planned opportunities for pupils to develop other important skills such as social skills, teamwork and creativity.

We employ a specialist coach in PE for one afternoon each week. James works with all children in school in differentiated age groups and provides specialist expertise in a range of sports teaching alongside class teachers or taking small focus groups.

In addition to this, all pupils in the school have weekly swimming lessons, for one term each year, at The Hydro in Harrogate and take part in school swimming galas.

Health and Wellbeing

Beckwithshaw is committed to our children's health and wellbeing and has recently established the following clubs in support of this:

Sports and Competitions

As a school we value competitive sport. We aim to engage children in activities that not only develop their physical skills but teach them about the 6 spirits of the games: team work, respect, honesty, passion, determination and self-belief, continuing the legacy of the Olympic Games at grass roots level. We have used part of our sports premium funding to become a member of the HSSP.

Harrogate Schools Sports Partnership

As a result of being part of the Harrogate Schools Sports Partnership, the children from all classes of school have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular inter school sports competitions, at local and county level. Our sporting competitions calendar dates are available below for recent and future events. We also hold regular intra family sporting competitions within school.

Out of school provision

There are numerous extra-curricular clubs organised to match the needs, interests and demands of the children. Our aim for 2019 is to ensure all children in school attend at least one extra-curricular club or sporting event at some point during the year.
